Post Grad

August 23, 2009

I wrote this post last night, but wordpress wouldn’t let me publish until today!

I love Saturdays. The whole weekend lies ahead!

We started out the weekend at the Farmer’s Market, and stocked up on some fresh eggs, meat and produce for some excellent eats this week.

And then stopped by the Glamorgan Bakery for what are seriously the world’s best cheese buns.

Lunch was light. And orange. Kashi crackers with about 2 T of white bean and grilled red pepper dip. And a super ripe and super sweet peach!

A green smoothie mid-afternoon. Made with spinach + milk + frozen banana. Simple. Tasty.

I went to see Post Grad with a friend this afternoon. I couldn’t turn down a popcorn. With butter. oh well!

I really enjoyed the movie. Very predictable, but cute. And kind of the perfect time in my life to see it, seeing as I just graduated this spring as well 🙂

< insert random tangent inspired by the movie >

Remember in high school, when you thought you’d go to university, graduate, and life would work out exactly the way you saw it? For me, reality came crashing down on me about a year ago. I had one year of school left, and realized I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I didn’t want to do what I was (then) doing.

I decided to change what I was studying  (somewhat). I decided to go to grad school. And I still don’t know exactly what I want to do when I graduate (again).

And that’s ok.

Even the people who do have their lives planned out will find out that nothing works out the way you think it will.

My favorite quote (paraphrased) from the movie:

What you do with your life is only half the equation. The other half, and maybe the more important half, is who you spend it with.

After all those grains (and grease) I was craving a salad.

Spinach + free-range Jamaican Me Crazy chicken sausage + corn + apple + raspberries. Topped with a lemon juice/balsamic vinegar/olive oil vinaigrette.

It was excellent (I LOVE  jerk spice)!  Such an interesting mix of flavours: hot, sweet, tangy. I ate about 2/3 of the salad (all of the expensive items though – the chicken and the raspberries).

Lastly, while baking tonight, I had the last remaining piece of my granola bars (about 1 inch square).

A great, healthy day? No. A horrible, unhealthy day? No. Balance is important!

I should have planned better though, and stuck a healthy snack in my purse for the movie, since I’d already had the cheese bun.

But that’s what this blog is: learning to eat and be healthy. It’s not perfection. It’s learning from my mistakes. And celebrating the victories!

That cheese bun looks soooo good! If I know I’m going to the movies or an afternoon out I will plan ahead. What is harder is when we decide do something that I didn’t plan for. But, like you said balance is important.

I’m with you – it’s all about balance! Your salad looks amazing…and so does your cheese bun!
